Where is your happy place? - General Ceel - 10-06-2023

Do you have any places you love to go to clear your head, find peace and enjoy yourself?

Since last month, my happy place is probably the most common answer globally, Disney World. I got home on the 6th September so I don't think I'm fully over missing it yet!

More locally, I don't actually know, I think I need a happy place. I love being on water. I got a paddleboard for Christmas and love being out on the river on it.

I love the beach too. I love spending a summer day at the beach with the family, or even a non summer day. We went to the coast today for 4-5 hours despite there being no sun. Did some rock-pooling and got in the sea for a swim and some body-boarding.

Locally there is a small park where I run or hike every day, and that's my go to spot.

But about 65 miles from home is the Pine Creek Gorge/ Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. The views are spectacular from the top, and there is a 65 mile long trail along the bottom. Its heaven on earth!

I've run the 100k race on the trail twice and have done numerous long training runs there. The whole area has loads of state owned forest and parklands filled with trails and waterways.

In 2018 I went to a Greek island called Kefalonia. If you've seen Captain Corelli's Mandolin you'll know it. It's a breathtakingly stunning place. I went back again last year and plan to return several more times over the years. There's a pretty big part of me that wants to retire out there.

Sounds beautiful. My travels are limited. I'm also not into crowds and tourism spots. I'm a wilderness guy, and luckily we've got plenty of that within day-tripping distance.

I do love woodland. There is a small wooded area near my house, about a 3 minute walk away, and you can easily have a 15 minute stroll around there and you would never know you were a mile and a half away from a busy city centre.

Here the only thing that breaks up the woodlands are towns, bodies of water and farms. The general trend of the world seems to be deforestation, but around here the forests are in some ways healthier than they've been in a century because the logging is less, as is the quantity and size of the farms.

Some people are enamored of the American west, and its beautiful in its own way... but I don't think I could live without all the green that we have here in the spring and summer.
