For sure he was cleared, but so was OJ. As the article states, a 3D Animation that analysed over a billion data points proves that Stewart accelerated and fishtailed his car in the direction of Ward. Why he did that I guess only he knows. He was a Nascar Champion, an immensely talented driver. Seems a strange mistake to make. He didn't reach out on the night of the incident, nor did he ever contact the family directly to convey any sympathy. I get a call might be difficult, but a letter or a card surely. He was back in Nascar three weeks later. He only missed three races before getting back in the driving seat. That's not necessarily unusual, I remember the heart-breaking incident in the same year as Ward Jr's death when Australian cricketer Phil Hughes died on the field after being struck in the neck by a cricket ball delivered by Shaun Abbott. He was clearly innocent of any wrongdoing and was back bowling within a fortnight.
The footage itself is dodgy, but then you have the whole story around it; he was swept from the circuit in a helicopter and never had to hand over his in-car footage, his time spent with law enforcement was minimal and his statement to the police was just a half a page. In it he claims he was trying to speed downtrack but fishtailed, but this runs contrary to both the footage and other witness depositions. We'll never know the amounts, but Stewart obviously paid out a hefty sum to avoid a civil trial. I know nothing about Nascar, have no interest in it as a sport and have no vested interest in either Tony Stewart or Kevin Ward Jr. And from this objective view, on the balance of probabilities, he deliberately drove at him and killed him. And on the available evidence, my mind can't be changed either.
